The current economic situation is a major issue affecting institutions of higher education nationwide. Most of our institutions have neither financial margin nor psychological stamina to endure long-term "governance by anxiety." Our presidents and board members must exercise intelligent and strategic leadership, balanced with a genuine caring for the continued success of the institution and all involved. As members of the academic community we must recognize that our roles, regardless of rank or position, and the services we provide, are integral to achieving success.

Women working at all levels in higher education are invited to connect with peers and colleagues as we gather to discuss the opportunities generated during challenging times. As we strategically think about moving our institutions forward, we will explore:

  • How can you take on a leadership role in your institution?
  • What can you do to improve your department or area?
  • Who are your allies and how can they help you to gain support for your ideas?

Leading Alone, Leading Together: Navigating through Tough Economic Times focuses on preparing women to effectively lead from any place within an organization. The present economic climate provides us with an opportunity to:

  • Evaluate the health of our institutions;
  • Identify strengths, opportunities, and actions to initiate change; and
  • Transform ourselves as professionals, and higher education as a whole.

Guest Speakers:

As an ACE group, NHWHEL urges conference participants to watch Gordon Gee, president of the Ohio State University, give the Robert H. Atwell Lecture at the ACE 91st annual meeting.
